The consular hotel

Existing for more tan 200 years

As a very important heart of textile industry, Carcassonne managed to get the creation of a Chamber of Commerce only in 1789, because of the city's position between Toulouse and Montpellier, which already had their own consular institutions. One body had been playing this role partly since Colbert time: the swearing union of textile traders and manufacturers[1].

Nevertheless, the Chamber of Carcassonne was among of the first ones to be created during the Consulate.

In the nineteenth century, the Chamber's meetings used to take place firstly at the Prefecture, before choosing more functional premises, including for its library: the Dupuys' House in the Grand'rue.

In 1910, there was some question of the ancient bishop's building - which belonged to the Aude, and partly to the Pyrénées-Orientales, as the Murats' House - being bought.

What about today?

Today, the address is still the same. The n° 3 of Camille Pelletan Boulevard now belongs to the National Patrimony and welcomes visitors every year.
